Another year is starting, meaning we’re set for another episode in the ever evolving world of web design. Here are few key trends already announced for 2018.

1.Goodbye hard corners, hello curves!

It’s been a general trend for major industry players (Twitter and Google, for example) to renounce the traditional right angles for various website elements and adopt rounded corners as the new standard. 2018 is therefore expected to make the transition official, meaning we’ll have a well rounded new year.

2. App & mobile animation

Following the extraordinary popularity of gifs, all-things-animated is becoming, well, a thing. It is therefore highly likely that we will moving from the already existent desktop animations to moving bits & bolts on smaller screens. Mobile applications and website versions have started to embrace the magic of animations and we expect to see even more of the animated atmosphere in the new year.

3. Farewell, flat design

It was all the hype a few years ago but it looks like the end is drawing near for flat design all across the WWW. While one of its initial philosophies was simplifying user experiences and creating clean, uncluttered spaces, studies have recently shown that as many as 22% of users find it substantially harder to navigate websites and apps with pure flat design. Designers and UX specialists are already talking about bringing back concepts such as shadows and even gradients so brace yourself for a revived design landscape in 2018.

4. Geometrical influences

Patterns, circles, lines, pretty much any geometrical shape will continue their popular rise, particularly seen in a website’s interactive components and as backgrounds or hero images.

Don’t forget to balance your abstract cues with human “interfaces” — portraits, smiles, groups as either photographs or videos.

5. Bright colors and photographs

Ultra violet has already been announced as the color of the new year, opening the gates for exciting combinations and highlights. Be bold in your choice of colors, your average browser today has seen thousands of color schemes already. Be memorable but surely not annoying :)

Regardless of the changing color trends, one philosophy is here to stay, however: photographs are gold content for any web design.

Appeal to people’s highly sensitive visual receptors and tell stories, create an atmosphere and communicate through high quality photos.

Happy web designing in 2018!
